Canopy Walk (Excursion)

The first canopy walk way in an European National Park was inaugurated in 2005. It´s located in the south eastern part of Hainich. A semi- natural forest with about 10 tree species and many different structures in the closer vicinity can be experienced during a walk in the tree tops. The walkway leads through several canopy levels over a length of 300 metres and ascends from 10 to 20 metres. It ends at a tree tower with a tree house which, at a height of 44 metres, offers a fantastic view over the complex mosaic of the Hainich deciduous forest and its pleasant surroundings. Impressive insights into the so far unknown world of tree crowns and the biology of the tree canopy are rendered possible. With luck, birds like the protected middle-spotted woodpecker or other animals can be observed. The price includes a bus transfer from the venue.

Guided Tour Buchenwald
Buchenwald concentration camp (German: Konzentrationslager or 'KZ' Buchenwald) was a Nazi concentration camp established on the Ettersberg (Etter Mountain) near Weimar in July 1937, and one of the largest and first camps on German soil. Placed over the camp's main entrance gate, was the slogan Jedem das Seine (literally "to each his own", but figuratively "everyone gets what he deserves"). The Nazis used Buchenwald until the camp's liberation in 1945. From 1945 to 1950, the Soviet Union used the occupied camp as an NKVD special camp for Nazis and other Germans. On 6 January 1950, the Soviets handed over Buchenwald to the East German Ministry of Internal Affairs. Find out more about the camps history in an audio guided tour.
